Quimper, city of art and history
You can take beautiful walks around the edge of the city and observe its remarkable history. The Quimper region is composed of Quimper and six other towns. These towns form a pretty green belt that you can explore by walking or taking the hiking trails. They share a very rich architectural heritage. Discover the chapels, fountains, calvaries, castles, parks and gardens. We invite you to explore these treasures during your stay at Kérantérec Campsite. Thousand-year-old Quimper, capital of Finistère, bears the City of Art and History label.
It has three old centers. The primitive site in the Locmaria district has a Romanesque church dating from the 18th century, an old priory and a beautiful medieval garden by the water. The gorgeous Saint-Corentin Cathedral, jewel of Breton Gothic art, is flanked by the old Bishops’ Palace and a garden surrounded by ramparts. The town of the Dukes of Brittany is lined with timber-framed houses and the church of Saint-Mathieu, which has gorgeous stained glass windows. Two rivers pass through the city, including the Odet, considered one of the most beautiful in France. Quimper has won the Grand prix du fleurissement for its annual bloom since 2003.
The city of Quimper has four permanent museums, the Fine Arts Museum, the Breton Museum, the Contemporary Art Center and the Faience Museum. You can also visit the Henriot-Quimper earthenware factory and the Alambic Museum. Take a tour of the city with the Tourist Office and discover the fascinating secrets of its history. The Cornouaille and Max Jacob theaters present a variety of quality shows throughout the year.
As the business capital of southern Finistère, the city has many shops, artisans and services spread through its lively pedestrian streets with evocative names such as place du Beurre (butter square), rue du Sallé (savory street), rue des Boucheries (butchers street) and rue Kéréon, also known as the rue des Cordonniers (cobbler street).
Quimper is a great city for shopping. It has factory outlets such as the Henriot-Quimper earthenware factory and Armor Lux, as well as several markets (covered markets, neighborhood markets, organic market). The Taol Balenn, or big sale, takes place every year on the first Thursday in August. Quimper also has many biscuit shops and specialties, chocolate shops, candy shops, ice cream shops, crepes shops, restaurants and more.
