Locronan & Douarnenez

Locronan is a small town full of character! Located in Brittany, 40 km from La Forêt-Fouesnant and 16 km from Quimper. Listed as a Historic Monument since 1924, Locronan is one of Brittany’s most prestigious sites, thanks to its architectural quality. Numerous craftsmen have set up shop here. Situated on a mountain in an exceptional natural setting, 5 km from the sea, Locronan is also the starting point for numerous hiking and mountain bike trails. A veritable land of inspiration for artists, painters, writers, sculptors and filmmakers, the charm of this little Breton jewel never leaves you indifferent. Locronan has made a convincing case for joining the exclusive clubs of“petites cités de caractère” and “plus beaux villages de France”. You’ll quickly understand why as you stroll through the superb residences that radiate around the beautiful central square and its well. In the 11th century, Saint-Ronan Christianized the area and gave birth to the town. With a history dating back over 2,000 years, Locronan was originally a sacred place for the Celts known as a “nemeton”¹ .

It then became an important religious center in the Middle Ages, and a major center for sailcloth manufacture for the local shipbuilding industry. Trade with all the major fleets builds fortunes and harmonious granite houses. The walls remain true to their original design. In summer, the city is yours in the caressing morning light that gilds the old stones. Elegant houses with sculpted dormer windows surround the square.

¹The term nemeton is well attested in ancient inscriptions written in the Gallic language, using either the Greek or Latin alphabet. It certainly originally meant “sacred wood” before slipping into the meaning of “sanctuary”.

The Church of Saint-Ronan and the Chapel of Pénity, adjoining one another, share a common façade, without mixing their gargoyles. The surrounding streets are also lined with charming buildings. To preserve the authenticity of the historic heart, cars are kept outside, and traditional signs indicate the stores. Among them are bakeries that make formidable kouign-Amann! The cult of Saint Ronan gives rise to a Troménie, a pardon that follows the circuit of his meditations. The impressive and colorful Grande Troménie takes place every 6 years in July. Banners and blue costumes march in procession along the 12 km stretch of the ancient “nemeton”.

Pagan activities also showcase the city’s unspoilt beauty. Many films take advantage of this unique setting: Roman Polanski’s “Tess”, Philippe de Broca’s “Chouans”, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “Un long dimanche de fiançailles”… Filmmakers and viewers alike appreciate this setting in its natural state, free from electric cables, antennas or traffic lights. You’ll also find a wide choice of cafés, crêperies and craft stores throughout the village, and some of the small art galleries scattered around town are impressive. The Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Locronan offers an interesting look at the town’s history.
