On the outskirts of the city, a remarkable heritage makes for wonderful walks. The Pays de Quimper is made up of Quimper and six other communes. The town is made up of three ancient cores. The original site, in the Locmaria district, boasts an 18th-century Romanesque church, a former priory and a lovely medieval waterside garden. The city of bishops, home to the splendid Saint-Corentin cathedral, a jewel of Breton Gothic art, flanked by theformer Palais des Evêques and its small garden bordered by ramparts, will enchant you. The town of the Dukes of Brittany, with its timber-framed houses, and thechurch of Saint-Mathieu, with its remarkable stained-glass windows, are also worth a visit on a stroll through Quimper. Grand prix du fleurissement since 2003, the town is crossed by two rivers, including the Odet, considered to be one of the most beautiful in France.

Quimper has four permanent museums: the Musée des Beaux-arts, the Musée Départemental Breton, the Centre d’Art Contemporain and the Musée de la Faïence. As the commercial capital of South Finistère, the town boasts a large number of shops, craftsmen and services in lively pedestrian streets with evocative names such as Place au beurre, Rue du Sallé, Rue des Boucheries and Rue Kéréon, also known as Rue des cordonniers.

An ideal city for shopping, it also boasts large factory outlets, such as Henriot-Quimper and Armor Lux, and several markets (halles, local markets, organic markets). Every year, the “Taol Balenn” is held on the first Thursday in August. In Quimper you’ll also find numerous cookie and specialty shops, chocolate factories, confectioners, ice-cream parlors, crêperies and restaurants…
