Pont l’Abbé

Around the campsite in South Finistère

The historic town of Pont-l’Abbé was described by Maupassant as “ the most Breton of all the towns in Breton Brittany “. It’s in this land of legends, in the heart of the Bigouden region, that the famous headdress has grown in stature, honoring the skills of the embroiderers. Discover Pont L’abbé during your next stay in South Finistère.

Visit Pont l’Abbé

From the quays, built from the stones of the ancient walls, narrow streets lead to the Gothic church of Notre-Dame des Carmes. This is the only vestige of a convent founded in the 14th century. In the chapel, typical of “mendicant” architecture, you can admire the luminous 19th-century stained glass windows. The original rose windows are set in a large granite lace. The streets and squares are dotted with mansions built in the 16th and 17th centuries by local gentlemen. But most of the beautiful homes were built in the 19th century by a bourgeoisie established in the potato trade. This trading tradition still animates the Thursday market, the largest in Cornouaille, as well as the many stores lining the alleyways.
